Useful tips and travel hacks!

  • Take the information leaflets at the aiport or in the information centers which are basically on every corner
  • We have not bought any map of the island – we got by with the iPhone application Navfree, which proved to be better than standard GPS navigation
  • Most valued app for travelling was Rankers (www.rankers.co.nz) that shows tips for trips, walks, camping, etc. It is really worth it because it saved us a lot of money and time.!
  • Perfect website which works similar as Groupon is bookme.co.nz
  • Internet connection in NZ
    • internet in campsites is usually 3 to 7 dollars for 24 hours, provided by one of national Internet providers like IKS, IAC, Zenbu, Tomizone. Mostly very slow response is often limited by data usage (from 100 Mb to 10 Gb)
    • Free WIFI in (or near) fastfoods. We had best experience with Burger King (free wifi, 500 Mb, reachable from parking lot). McDonalds had usually paid connection or you need to buy some food there to get wifi pass.
    • Libraries – after closing time they usually shut down the wifi
    • Our tip! Bank branches of BNZ (www.bnz.co.nz). Almost in front of every BNZ branch you can catch their wifi and get 15 minutes (per 24 hours) of good Internet connection
    • data SIM from Vodafone costs 30 NZD per 1Gb (price in February 2014)
    • iSite departments, almost everytime paid connection
    • sometimes you can accidentaly catch free hotel or motel wifi
    • usefull mobile app Freewifi
  • Gas (petrol)
    • at the airport in Christchurch we received with the iSite Traveller magazine
AA Smartfuel card. With this card you can get  with each fueling (including
the first one) at Caltex and BP gas tation a discount of 6 cents per liter (need to get 40 liters or more) we saved at least two NZD each time
    • during our trip (February 2014) there was discount coupon (40 cents per liter) for gas at Mobile gas station by every shopping at PAK’nSAVE shopping mall
ve výši 40centu na litr (max 100 litru)
  • Groceries
